What contrast therapy is

Contrast therapy means going back and forth between heat and cold: a sauna, then a cold plunge, then rest, and repeat. It is the Nordic sauna habit in a city studio. Our guide to going from the sauna to a cold plunge explains how long to stay in each and how many rounds to do.

Three kinds of places

Private suites. Many studios rent a room with an infrared sauna and a cold plunge tub for one or two people, booked by the session. Chains like SweatHouz, Pause Studio, Reboot and City Sweats work this way.

Social saunas and bathhouses. Places like Othership in New York, ROK SPAS in Denver and Moki Sauna in Boston have a big shared sauna and several cold tubs or a cold pool. You book a time slot and share the space with others. See all bathhouses and social saunas.

Outdoor saunas by the water. In Seattle, Minneapolis and the Bay Area, some saunas sit by a lake, the bay or the Sound, and the cold plunge is the water itself. See the outdoor and lakeside saunas.

How cold is a cold plunge?

Studio tubs are chilled to a set temperature, usually somewhere between the high 30s and the mid 50s °F. Lakes and the ocean change with the season. Where a place publishes its water temperature, the warm and cold bar on each listing shows it.

Before you go

Bring a swimsuit unless the listing says otherwise, book ahead, and start with short dips. If you have a heart condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor first. We do not make health claims about cold plunging; our guide to sauna benefits sticks to what published studies show.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cold plunge session cost?

Prices vary a lot by city and by format. A shared social sauna slot often costs less than a private suite. Each listing shows the regular price for a session or a day pass, without intro deals.

How long should you stay in a cold plunge?

Most studios suggest starting with a short dip and building up slowly. Our sauna and cold plunge guide covers timing in more detail.

Do I need a swimsuit for a cold plunge?

At most contrast therapy studios with shared areas, yes. In a private suite it is usually up to you. Each listing shows the swimsuit rule when the studio publishes one.

What is the difference between a cold plunge and an ice bath?

They are mostly the same thing. A cold plunge is usually a chilled tub kept at a set temperature, while an ice bath is cooled with ice. The studios we list use chilled tubs, cold pools or natural water.

How much does a day pass at one of these cold plunge and contrast therapy studios cost in the US?

Of the 10 places we list with a published day pass, prices run from $29 to $135, with a median of $38 (prices checked October 2026).

Where can I do sauna and cold plunge in the US?

161 places we list have a cold plunge or cold pool next to the sauna, including Lore Bathing Club, Othership Flatiron, Othership Williamsburg, SAINT and The Altar.
