How Los Angeles does the sauna

Most of the city's big bathhouses are Korean spas, and most of those are in or near Koreatown. They follow the same pattern: gender-separated wet areas with hot and cold pools, dry saunas and steam rooms, where you bathe without a swimsuit, plus co-ed heat rooms and lounges for which the spa provides clothes. Some are open to women only, and some admit guests 18 and over only, so check each listing before you go.

On the Westside, from Venice and Santa Monica to Brentwood, the newer model is the contrast therapy studio: a sauna and a cold plunge, often in a private suite you book by the session. Many use infrared saunas, which run cooler than a Finnish sauna. Teddy's Hot House in Venice is one of the few with a traditional Finnish sauna.

The city also has Russian-style banyas, with wet heat and cold plunges, in West Hollywood and on Pico Boulevard.
