What an infrared sauna studio is

An infrared sauna warms your body with infrared panels instead of heating the air with a stove. The room runs much cooler than a Finnish sauna, usually around 120 to 160°F, and you sweat at a slower pace. Our comparison of Finnish and infrared saunas explains the difference in more detail.

Infrared studios are usually private. You book a suite for yourself or for two, close the door and set your own music, light and session length. That makes them a different experience from a bathhouse, where the sauna is shared.

Sauna plus cold plunge

Many studios now pair the infrared room with a cold plunge tub in the same suite, so you can go back and forth without leaving the room. If you want that, look for the cold plunge chip on each listing, or browse the cold plunge and contrast therapy studios instead. Our guide to going from the sauna to a cold plunge covers timing and safety.

Prices and booking

Infrared studios sell single sessions, intro offers and monthly memberships. We list the regular price for one session and leave out intro deals. Almost every studio asks you to book ahead, since each room holds one or two people at a time.

Chains and independents

Several chains run infrared studios in more than one city, including Perspire Sauna Studio, SweatHouz, Pause Studio and beem Light Sauna. Their suites look alike from city to city, while independent studios vary more in size, extras and price.

Frequently asked questions

How hot is an infrared sauna?

Most infrared rooms run between about 120 and 160°F, well below a traditional Finnish sauna. Some studios list settings up to about 175°F. Where a studio publishes its temperature, we show it on the listing.

How long is an infrared sauna session?

Most studios sell sessions of 30 to 60 minutes. Each listing shows the session length when the studio publishes it.

Do I need to book an infrared sauna in advance?

Yes, at almost every studio. The suites are private and hold one or two people, so walk-ins are rarely possible.

Is infrared or traditional sauna better?

They feel different rather than one being better. Infrared is cooler and gentler, a Finnish sauna is hotter and you can pour water on the stones. Read our guide to Finnish and infrared saunas to choose.

Where can I do sauna and cold plunge in the US?

85 places we list have a cold plunge or cold pool next to the sauna, including Reboot Marina, Reboot Mission, Reboot Rockridge, SweatHouz The Marina and Worthy Self-Care Studio.
