What a jjimjilbang is

A jjimjilbang is a Korean bathhouse with two parts. The single-gender bathing areas have hot and cold pools, a sauna and a steam room, and people go nude there. The co-ed area has heated rooms lined with clay, salt, jade or charcoal, where everyone wears the cotton uniform the spa hands out. Many have a Korean restaurant, and some stay open late.

Where to find them

Los Angeles has the most, with a cluster in Koreatown, and the Korean spas in Los Angeles page lists them all. New York has spas in Manhattan and Queens, including Spa Castle in College Point, and across the Hudson in New Jersey there are King Spa & Sauna in Palisades Park, SoJo Spa Club in Edgewater and Island Spa & Sauna in Edison. King Spa has locations in Niles outside Chicago, in Dallas and in Chantilly, Virginia. Northern Virginia also has Spa World and Parkside Spa & Sauna, Houston has Spa World in Katy and Gangnam Spa on Highway 6, Atlanta's Korean spas are in Duluth, Tampa has Shangri-La Bath & Sauna on East Hillsborough Avenue, and the Seattle area has two in Lynnwood.

The body scrub

The signature extra is the seshin, a hard scrub with a rough mitt that takes off a surprising amount of dead skin. It is booked and paid separately in the single-gender area.

Before you go

Expect to shower before you get in the pools, to be nude in the bathing areas and to wear the uniform in the co-ed rooms. Our guides to sauna etiquette and what to wear cover the basics.
